Andy wrote most of the JK Updates. Keep that in mind as you read the 1st person references.
This first post sets the stage for the JK Updates. I’m going to start just before we first learned of Julie’s problems – technically before the JK Updates began.
I had just turned fifty years old.
For the first time in my life, my birthday seemed like a time to celebrate. Sarah arranged a surprise birthday party for me and many people came for the festivities. I had recently enrolled in seminary with great expectations of graduating quickly, easy classes, and learning lots of things. My beautiful wife, Sarah, passed into the third trimester of her first pregnancy. We had almost lost hope of having kids after several years of trying. I felt strong about myself, enthusiastic about the future.
Sarah felt vindicated after marrying an older man. She delighted in the process occurring within her. Julie kicked repeatedly and Sarah suffered from almost continual morning sickness. None of this dampened her joy as she approached the final months before Julie arrived. Decorating, parties and all the processes attached seemed daunting and inviting.
As usual for us, we stayed up late discussing the day and the future. Rachael, the cat, finds a concealed place to observe the ritual. During these family meetings, Julie listened quietly and slept. Sarah enjoyed relief from her miseries.
Sarah has a routine appointment at her OB/GYN the next day. Since she will also get an ultrasound along with grainy pictures of the baby, I had arranged to duck out of work for a couple hours.
Everything will change tomorrow, but tonight is calm…happy…good.
Andy, Sarah (and Julie)
